LSU campuses resorting to furloughs

John Lombardi, Times archives
The president of the LSU System John Lombardi submitted a plan to Gov. Jindal that would cut $34 million from the system's budget before the end of the current fiscal year, which ends June 30.

As part of the plan are furloughs (which we lovingly call furcation) for employee around the system.

The cuts came after Jindal's administration asked Louisiana's colleges and universities to developed budgets containing more cuts. The cuts are due to the drop in state tax income.

LSU-Shreveport is on spring break this week but before this announcement, they submitted to the system a retirement plan to save $1.6 million from the budget in 2010-2011 with saving increasing every year. The proposal said 43 faculty and 18 unclassified employees were available for the retirement plan--meaning those who are close to retirement or could be retired should consider doing so.

But that plan was for next year's cut. What about this year's? The campus' administration recently had a meeting with faculty and staff to talk about how much the cut would be-- $841,333.

That amount, however, does not include the mid-year cut--$963,875. LSUS' total proposed cut for the year is $1.9 million.

No word yet on what would be cut to make that number.
